About me

I’m a pianist, composer, and music educator in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
I’ve lived in Ottawa all my life, and I’ve studied piano performance, composition, music theory, and music history since the age of 4. Growing up, I took piano lessons with Ottawa teacher Catherine Donkin, as well as double bass lessons with National Arts Centre Orchestra bassist Hilda Cowie. While I only focus on piano now, playing two instruments when I was younger allowed me to have a wide variety of experiences in my musical education. I played bass in the concert band and jazz band in middle school as well as the Ottawa Youth Orchestra Academy’s Intermediate Strings and Junior Youth Orchestra. Then I attended the music program at Canterbury High School, a prominent arts high school in the city, where I played in the string ensembles and jazz ensembles as well as singing in the Male Chorus and Chamber Chorus. During these years I also played in the Ottawa Youth Orchestra, where I was principal bass for two years. These numerous ensemble experiences helped tremendously in my growth as a musician and gave me a high level of insight into the world of music education. During my high school years I was still an active pianist, and I even premiered John Gordon Armstrong’s solo piano work, Scorpio, at the Music and Beyond Festival in 2012.
I hold a Bachelor of Music and Master of Music from the University of Ottawa, where I studied piano performance with celebrated Canadian concert pianist and recording artist David Jalbert. During my bachelor’s degree, I also continued to study double bass with former NACO principal bassist and Ottawa Symphony Orchestra conductor David Currie, and played in the orchestra under his insightful direction. During this time, I also studied composition with acclaimed Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy, and worked with the prominent Ottawa pianist and composer Frédéric Lacroix on both piano and composition. I even continued my jazz experience during this time, playing in the uOttawa Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Ottawa jazz pianist Yves Laroche. I also played the piano in various masterclasses and events at uOttawa, including the Angela Hewitt masterclass in 2017, the Stewart Goodyear masterclass in 2023, and the uOttawa chamber music gala at the NAC Fourth Stage in 2017. In 2017 I was selected to perform at the Chamberfest City Lights concert series at City Hall.
I have received scholarships and awards from the Kiwanis Festival, the Ottawa Youth Orchestra Academy, the Young String Performers Foundation, the Orford Music Academy, the Domaine Forget Academy, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). At uOttawa, I was awarded the Nora Hickson Kelly Scholarship for piano performance in 2016 and the Jean-Marie Beaudet Scholarship for composition in 2017.
I won the Thirteen Strings University of Ottawa Composition Competition and the SOCAN Ernest McMillan Award for Young Composers in 2017, and my works have been performed by the Thirteen Strings ensemble and the Bozzini Quartet. I continue to compose solo piano and chamber music as well as performing and recording free improvisation. My goal as a composer is to seamlessly incorporate influences from classical and popular music to create a new level of accessibility and emotional directness in contemporary classical music, as well as to bring improvisation back into the mainstream as a practice in classical performance and creation.
As a music educator, I am currently teaching piano lessons at Rideau Park United Church in Ottawa. I aim to practice a holistic approach to music education, promoting creative openness, mindfulness, and authentic expression. My practice draws from a variety of artistic philosophies and traditions to help students realize their authentic selves as artists.
